What donghua is this? How to find a Chinese animation's name from a YouTube Short
Published 30 October 2026.
Short answer: donghua clips are full of "donghua name?" comments, and the answer is usually in the replies. Open them yourself, or paste the link into CommentSift and it reads the comments and replies for you.
What a donghua is
Donghua is the Chinese word for animation. People use it for animated series made in China, the way "anime" is used for animation from Japan. Many donghua are based on Chinese web novels or manhua (Chinese comics), so the same story can turn up as a novel, a comic and a series.
Why donghua clips rarely say the name
Clip channels post a fight or a big moment with music, and the title is often just a caption or a row of hashtags. The series' name is usually in the hashtags, the description or the replies.
A donghua can also have three or more names: the Chinese title, the same title written in pinyin (Chinese in Latin letters), and one or more English translations. So two people in the comments may give you two different names for the same series. Both can be right.
How to look by hand
- Open the comments and sort by Top comments.
- Look for "donghua name?", "name of this anime?" or "what's the title?". Tap replies under them. People often call donghua "anime" in the comments, so look for both words.
- Check the hashtags and the description. Next to general tags like #donghua there is often one that is the series' name.
- Look at the channel's other Shorts. Clip channels often post many parts of the same series, and another part may name it.
- Found a name? Look it up on AniList or Wikipedia to check the pictures and characters match. If it lists other names, those are the same series.
How to do it with CommentSift
- In the YouTube app, tap Share under the video (on Shorts it's the arrow on the right).
- Tap Copy link.
- Open CommentSift and tap Paste. It starts looking right away. If the Paste button doesn't work on your phone, paste the link into the box yourself and tap Find the name.
CommentSift reads the comments, the replies under them and the description, including hashtags. When it finds a name, it shows where it came from and checks it against AniList and Wikipedia. If nobody has named it yet, it says so instead of guessing, and you can add the video to your check-back list.
CommentSift reads comments on YouTube links, from the app or a browser. TikTok and Instagram don't let apps read comments, so there you copy and paste them in: here is how to find a show's name from a TikTok.
Only have a screenshot?
Picture searches made for anime may not know a donghua, so going back to the video and reading its comments usually works better. If you can't find the video, try Google Lens. See how to find an anime from a screenshot.
Donghua, manhua or something else?
You don't need to know. CommentSift looks for Chinese animation the same way it looks for anime, manhwa, manhua, dramas and movies. If the clip shows comic panels instead of animation, it is probably a manhua or manhwa: see what manhwa is this?
