What movie is this? How to find a movie or TV show name from a YouTube clip

Published 15 October 2026.

Short answer: someone in the comments has usually already asked "what movie is this?" and someone else answered. Open the replies under that question, or paste the link into CommentSift and it reads the comments and replies for you.

Why clips leave the name out

Clip channels cut a scene down to a minute, add a caption like "He didn't know who he was talking to", and often don't say where it's from. Movie recap channels do the same with a full story told in ten minutes. The name usually turns up in the comments, the description or the channel's playlists.

How to look by hand

  1. Open the comments and sort by Top comments.
  2. Look for "movie name?", "what's this film?" or "name of the show?". Tap replies under them.
  3. Check the description and any pinned comment. Some channels write "Movie:" or "Film:" there.
  4. Look at the channel's playlists. Recap channels often group clips from the same movie or series.
  5. Still nothing? Screenshot a clear frame of an actor's face and search it with Google Lens, then look up that actor's films.
  6. Found a name? Check it on Wikipedia. The cast list and plot will tell you if it's the right one.

How to do it with CommentSift

  1. In the YouTube app, tap Share under the video (on Shorts it's the arrow on the right).
  2. Tap Copy link.
  3. Open CommentSift and tap Paste. It starts looking right away. If the Paste button doesn't work on your phone, paste the link into the box yourself and tap Find the name.

CommentSift reads the comments and the replies under them. When it finds a name, it shows the comment it came from and checks it against Wikipedia. If nobody has named it yet, it says so instead of guessing, and you can add the video to your check-back list to look again later.

CommentSift reads comments on YouTube links, from the app or a browser. TikTok and Instagram don't let apps read comments, so there you copy and paste them in: here is how to find a show's name from a TikTok.

What if nobody knows yet?

New clips sometimes have no answer yet. Come back in a day or two; people often name it once more viewers see it. If you find the name somewhere else, tell CommentSift with I know the name so the next person gets it faster.
