What anime is this? How to find an anime from a screenshot
Published 27 October 2026.
Short answer: search the screenshot with a free anime scene search such as trace.moe, or with Google Lens. If the screenshot came from a video, the faster way is often to go back to that video: someone in the comments has usually asked "name?" already, and CommentSift can read the comments and replies for you.
Search the picture
- Use a clean frame. Pick a still from the show itself, not a meme, a fan drawing or an edit with big text or stickers on it. Those are much harder to match.
- Crop out the extras. Cut away phone bars, channel logos and anything personal, like your name or messages, before you upload the picture anywhere.
- Try an anime scene search. trace.moe is a free site that looks for the same scene in anime. It knows anime only, so it won't find a manhwa, a drama or a movie.
- Try Google Lens. On a phone, open the screenshot in Google Photos or the Google app and tap the Lens button. On a computer, search the picture at Google Images. Lens also works for dramas, movies and comics.
- Try a few frames. If one picture finds nothing, try another scene, ideally one with a main character's face.
- Check the name you found. Look it up on AniList or Wikipedia and compare the characters, so you know it's the right show.
Got the screenshot from a video? Use the comments
A picture search compares pixels. Fans in the comments have usually seen the whole show, so they often know the name even when the clip is cropped, flipped or edited.
From a YouTube video or Short
- Find the video again (your watch history helps).
- Tap Share, then Copy link.
- Open CommentSift and tap Paste. It reads the comments, the replies under them and the description, and shows where the name came from.
If nobody has named it yet, CommentSift says so instead of guessing, and you can add the video to your check-back list.
From TikTok or Instagram
TikTok and Instagram don't let apps read their comments, so copy the "name?" comments and their replies and paste them into CommentSift's comment box. Here is how: find a show's name from a TikTok and find the name of a show from an Instagram Reel.
Good to know
- Anime, manhwa or drama? If the picture looks like a comic panel, it may be a manhwa or webtoon. See what manhwa is this? A live-action scene is more likely a drama or movie: see what K-drama is this? and what movie is this?
- Your picture is yours. Any site you upload to has its own rules about what it keeps. Read its privacy policy, and crop out anything personal first.
- On CommentSift, if you see a box called Only have a screenshot? Search with a picture, you can use it right there. It sends a small copy to trace.moe and keeps only a tiny fingerprint, never the picture. See our Privacy Policy.
