Privacy Policy
Last updated 1 October 2026. CommentSift was called TitleSift until 1 October 2026; nothing else changed.
Short version: CommentSift has no accounts and no ads. We don't ask for your name, and we don't sell anything about you. To answer you, we read public YouTube comments. Your check-back list stays on your own device.
Who we are
CommentSift (commentsift.com) finds the name of the anime, manhwa, manga, webtoon, movie or TV show in a YouTube clip. Questions about this policy: titlesift@gmail.com.
CommentSift uses YouTube API Services
To find a name, CommentSift uses the YouTube API Services to read the title, description and public comments of the video you paste. By using CommentSift you also agree to the YouTube Terms of Service. Google's handling of data is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
CommentSift does not ask you to sign in with Google or YouTube, and it never reads anything from your own YouTube account.
What we collect and why
- The link you paste. We send it to YouTube to read that video's public details and comments, then look up the name on AniList, MangaDex and Wikipedia. We keep the answer in memory for up to 6 hours so the next person asking about the same video gets it faster. We don't record which links you personally looked up.
- Your IP address. It's used, in memory only, to stop any one visitor using up the shared daily allowance (30 lookups an hour, one price vote a day, and each person counted once per name). It's forgotten when the server restarts and isn't written to our logs by CommentSift. Our host, Render, keeps its own standard server logs.
- Feedback you choose to send. If you use "Was this right?" or "Send feedback", we receive what you wrote, the video you were looking at and the answer we gave. It's emailed to us through Formspree and may be saved as a private note in our code repository on GitHub so we can fix the problem. Don't include personal details you don't want us to have.
- Names you add or confirm. If you type a name with "I know the name" or "What's the right name?", or tap "Yes" on an answer, we save that name with the video's ID and a count of how many people gave it. Once a catalogue such as AniList knows the name, or a second person gives the same one, we show it to anyone who looks up that video. We don't save who gave it. These names are kept in our private code repository on GitHub. Only type the name of a show or comic, never anything personal.
- Your answer to "Would you pay?" We count the answers. Only the totals are saved, not who gave them.
- Visit counts. Each time the page opens, it tells us whether this is your browser's first visit today or ever, and which language the page is shown in. We add these to daily totals (visitors, page views, lookups, answers found, names added). Only the totals are saved, not who visited.
We use this information only to run and improve CommentSift. We don't sell it, rent it or use it for advertising.
What's stored on your device
CommentSift uses your browser's local storage, not cookies, to remember your check-back list, your language and light or dark choice, whether you've already answered "Would you pay?", and the last day you visited. These stay on your device; the page only tells us whether today is your first visit, as described above. You can clear it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
Other services your browser talks to
When the page loads, your browser fetches fonts from Google Fonts and video thumbnails from YouTube's image servers. Those companies can see your IP address, as with any website that shows their content. CommentSift shows no ads and lets no third party serve ads or other content on it. The "Tip on Ko-fi" link takes you to Ko-fi, which has its own privacy policy.
How long we keep things
Answers are kept in memory for up to 6 hours. The per-visitor lookup limits are cleared on restart; the daily totals are kept. Feedback is kept until we've dealt with it. Names you add are kept while they help people find the show; email us to have one removed. We never keep YouTube comments for more than 30 days.
Children
CommentSift isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
You can use CommentSift without sending feedback or answering the price question. To ask what we hold about you or to have your feedback deleted, email titlesift@gmail.com.
Changes
If we change what we collect, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
